This Swine Life: Hog Named 6-7 Pardoned by Miami Dade County Leader.
It might not have been at the same level as sparing festive fowl, but the Miami-Dade County mayor experienced a presidential-style act this week by formally pardoning the life of a pig named Six Seven.
Daniella Levine Cava carried out the annual tradition at the Cuban-style Latin Cafe 2000 in the heart of Miami’s iconic Little Havana neighborhood.
“The swine has done no wrong. She is worthy of this pardon. She has committed zero crimes,” stated the mayor in a speech with clear references to the sheer volume of pardons issued from the start of the commencement of a second term in office.
“Unless you count eating six or seven apples per day,” she went on. “Let this swine have a long and happy life without fear.”
This ceremony, which both honors and questions the local cultural practice of feasting on pork during the holidays, was created to emulate the yearly bird sparing at the White House.
The swine, contributed by a first responder, was named for the modern linguistic fad of young people exclaiming “six seven” – originating from a rap song lyric – often seemingly at random. The phrase became so widespread that a prominent word reference recently named “six-seven” its top term for the year.
A Future Secured
The pardoned swine is now scheduled to spend its days at a farm sanctuary “far from charcoal and roasting pans”, according to the event’s official press release.
“The pig pardon has become a beloved tradition to open the holiday season,” said Eric Castellanos, in a particularly upbeat message.
“It represents the essence of Miami: joyful, varied, and rooted in traditions that unite the community. Every time, we are honored to observe tradition and kindness in a way only Miami can.”
Participants enjoyed a meat-free selection of spinach croquetas and cafecito as they toasted Six Seven’s big moment.
