The Hamilton Island Resort, one of the Popular Queensland Getaway on the Great Barrier Reef, Reportedly Set to be Sold by American Private Equity Firm.
A major tropical holiday destination located on the World Heritage-listed Great Barrier Reef has entered into an agreement for sale to a American investment group in a deal said to be worth 1.2 billion Australian dollars.
“It is an honor to continue the legacy and commitment of the family owners has built in the heart of the iconic Great Barrier Reef,” stated a senior representative.
Details of the Sale
Headquartered in New York, the investment firm Blackstone – the owner of the hospitality group Crown Resorts – announced it had signed an agreement to acquire the island resort from the Oatley family owners, pending customary regulatory approvals.
The sellers issued a comment saying they welcomed the new owners of an island that holds a “unique position in the affections of many Australians” and is referred to as “Australia’s Tropical Island”.
Hamilton Island's Scale and Features
Positioned roughly 900 kilometers north of Brisbane and about 500km south of Cairns, the island covers over 1,130 hectares spanning two separate islands.
Roughly thirty percent of the land is developed, featuring a substantial range of amenities:
- Five hotels
- Over twenty restaurants and bars
- Twenty shops and retail spaces
- An championship 18-hole golf course on adjacent Dent Island
- A boat marina and a commercial airport
Hamilton Island is described as a major job provider in the Whitsunday region, supporting a large on-island community and workforce, as well as a broad network of regional partners, suppliers, and local businesses.
Historical Context at Ownership
The late Robert Oatley, a renowned yachtsman and vintner, originally purchased the resort for $200 million in the year 2003 after spying the island from the deck a yacht while sailing through the Whitsundays.
The island's major development phase initially started in the 1980s. In the decades before that, it was characterized by simple iron huts and modest accommodations that hosted domestic holidaymakers from inland areas and from the south.
Broader Portfolio and Local Heritage
The acquiring firm has ownership of hotels and luxury resorts in multiple countries, such as Japan, India, the Maldives, Sri Lanka, and the United States.
The Whitsunday region is the ancestral territory of the Ngaro people. The name derives from Captain James Cook, who sailed the Endeavour through the island group on Sunday 3 June 1770, which was Whit Sunday.
