The English golfer Wins Abu Dhabi HSBC Championship in Dramatic Playoff Battle Against Fellow Englishman Fleetwood
The 30-year-old golfer displayed remarkable composure to claim the prestigious Abu Dhabi title on Sunday, defeating Tommy Fleetwood in a dramatic playoff after a topsy-turvy last day of competition.
The Englishman sank a crucial birdie from just over eight feet to clinch the victory, echoing his only previous tournament success at the Scottish Open in 2020, which was also a playoff victory over Fleetwood.
Final Round Drama
The champion started the last day with a one-shot advantage over fellow Englishman Fleetwood and Denmark’s Nicolai Højgaard. He finished with a total score of 263 after a up-and-down, 67 final round that featured seven birdies and a pair of bogeys.
The challenger edged one shot clear with the 16th and 17th to play after a birdie putt on the sixteenth, but Rai tied it up again on the seventeenth and then failed to convert a ten-foot birdie attempt to win outright on the last green.
Play-Off Decider
This set up a play-off at Yas Links where the eventual winner prevailed to claim the championship and $1.5m (ÂŁ1.13 million) in prize money.
