Seattle's Pride Celebrations Will Go Ahead for World Cup Despite Objections from Egypt and Iran

Plans for Pride-focused celebrations throughout the city amid next summer’s World Cup are proceeding as scheduled, even after Iranian and Egyptian football federations voiced strong concerns about a scheduled “Pride Match.”

Stadium Policy and External Festivities

Local organizers stated clearly they are “moving forward as planned” with celebratory programming outside the stadium. These events will take place around the Group G match featuring Egypt and Iran on 26 June. Furthermore, the tournament's governing body has a policy allowing rainbow flags inside the match venue.

“As the local organising committee, our role is to prepare our city to welcome visitors for the matches and manage the fan activities outside of the match venue,” stated a committee representative.

Legal Background Behind the Objections

Homosexuality is illegal in Iran, while in Egypt, public decency statutes are often used to target and prosecute individuals from the LGBTQ+ community. The Egyptian federation declared it did not want to be linked to celebrations that “fundamentally oppose the social, religious and cultural values … in Arab and Islamic societies.” Similarly, the head of Iran's soccer body publicly registered “objections against the issue.”

The Governing Body's Position on Flags and Banners

The international federation holds full authority of stadiums on matchdays. Although its rules forbid political signage with political messages, it allows flags expressing “sporting and social symbols,” a category which includes the Pride flag. This policy was applied at the most recent tournament in Qatar and was reaffirmed following reports of authorities confiscating flags.

  • The Pride Match was an idea created to showcase Seattle’s proud history of championing equality.
  • A design contest has been commissioned to produce artwork celebrating the event.
  • Organizers are committed to ensuring every visitor are welcomed in the Pacific Northwest throughout the 48-team competition.

The region hosts one of the nation’s most prominent Iranian-American communities, a vibrant Egyptian diaspora, and diverse populations representing all nations. “Our commitment is to guaranteeing everyone experience the warmth, respect and dignity that characterizes our region,” organizers added.
