One-time economic leader Larry Summers is departing from the directorate at OpenAI, just several days after a batch of digital correspondence between him and notorious criminal the disgraced billionaire became publicly available.

He stated in an announcement that he was "appreciative for the privilege to have served, enthusiastic about the promise of the company, and anticipate tracking their development".

Summers, who previously led the Ivy League institution, declared on recently that he would be stepping back from public commitments due to his connections with Jeffrey Epstein.

Digital Correspondence

The recently released messages showed that the economist exchanged messages with Jeffrey Epstein until the eve of Epstein's 2019 detention for alleged sex trafficking of young people.

In a separate statement, the artificial intelligence company stated it accepted Summers' determination to step down.

"We acknowledge his numerous inputs and the viewpoint he brought to the governing body," the organization commented.

Legislative Background

This announcement follows after the entire Congress of the US legislature decided on Tuesday to pass a bill that would require the Department of Justice to make public its records on the case.

The bill will afterward move to the administration of the White House for endorsement. The President has indicated he expects to endorse the bill, after changing his view on the issue following pressure from his base.

Correspondence Findings

A group of Epstein-related messages made public by the House Oversight Committee last week included numerous prominent individuals in the financier's former circle, without suggesting any criminal activity by those figures.

The communications indicated that the economist and Jeffrey Epstein often met for meals, with he often seeking to introduce Summers to notable global figures.

Personal Response

After the messages were released with the general audience, the former official said he assumed "total ownership for my poor decision to maintain corresponding with Jeffrey Epstein".

He further stated that he wanted "to restore faith and mend bonds with the people nearest to me".

Previous Positions

Summers served in high-level positions under Democratic administrations; serving as treasury secretary under the former president, and as head of the economic advisory body under the former leader.

He presided over the institution from the early 2000s and remains a professor there. When declaring his departure from public commitments previously on this week, he stated he would continue his educational duties.

Additional Consequences

Following his statement on Monday, the Center for American Progress, a left-leaning think tank in Washington where Summers was a researcher, verified that Summers was ceased to be affiliated with the group.

Summers became part of the board of the AI company, which develops the language model, in the previous year - following a unsuccessful effort to remove its top executive OpenAI's head.
