EPA Urged to Prohibit Spraying of Antimicrobial Drugs on US Agricultural Produce Amidst Superbug Fears

A recent regulatory appeal from twelve public health and agricultural labor organizations is calling for the EPA to discontinue authorizing the application of antimicrobial agents on edible plants across the United States, pointing to superbug proliferation and health risks to farm laborers.

Farming Industry Uses Substantial Amounts of Antimicrobial Pesticides

The crop production sprays approximately 8m lbs of antimicrobial and fungicidal chemicals on American produce every year, with several of these chemicals restricted in foreign countries.

“Every year the public are at greater risk from toxic pathogens and illnesses because pharmaceutical drugs are applied on produce,” commented Nathan Donley.

Antibiotic Resistance Presents Major Public Health Risks

The widespread application of antibiotics, which are essential for combating human disease, as pesticides on crops jeopardizes community well-being because it can cause antibiotic-resistant pathogens. Similarly, overuse of antifungal agent pesticides can create fungal infections that are harder to treat with currently available medical drugs.

  • Treatment-resistant illnesses sicken about 2.8 million Americans and result in about 35,000 deaths per year.
  • Public health organizations have associated “therapeutically critical antimicrobials” authorized for crop application to antibiotic resistance, increased risk of bacterial illnesses and higher probability of antibiotic-resistant staph.

Ecological and Health Effects

Furthermore, eating chemical remnants on produce can alter the human gut microbiome and increase the chance of long-term illnesses. These agents also pollute water sources, and are believed to harm bees. Often low-income and Latino agricultural laborers are most at risk.

Frequently Used Antibiotic Pesticides and Agricultural Methods

Farms apply antimicrobials because they kill pathogens that can damage or wipe out plants. Among the most frequently used antibiotic pesticides is a common antibiotic, which is frequently used in medical care. Estimates indicate as much as 125k lbs have been sprayed on American produce in a one year.

Agricultural Sector Pressure and Regulatory Response

The formal request coincides with the regulator faces urging to expand the utilization of medical antimicrobials. The crop infection, transmitted by the insect pest, is severely affecting orange groves in Florida.

“I understand their desperation because they’re in difficult circumstances, but from a broader point of view this is certainly a obvious choice – it should not be allowed,” the expert said. “The key point is the enormous challenges created by applying medical drugs on food crops greatly exceed the crop issues.”

Other Methods and Future Outlook

Specialists recommend basic crop management actions that should be implemented first, such as increasing plant spacing, breeding more robust types of crops and detecting infected plants and rapidly extracting them to prevent the diseases from spreading.

The petition gives the EPA about half a decade to answer. Previously, the regulator banned a chemical in response to a parallel formal request, but a court blocked the regulatory action.

The organization can implement a ban, or must give a reason why it won’t. If the regulator, or a future administration, does not act, then the groups can sue. The legal battle could require more than a decade.

“We’re playing the extended strategy,” Donley stated.
