Edwards along with O'Neil are two of the initial candidates in the frame to succeed Vitor Pereira as manager of Wolves.
The previous coach was dismissed on the weekend following the team's 10-match without a victory beginning to the Premier League season.
And both candidates - each of whom have previous associations to the team - are among the options to be considered by the club leadership.
The manager is presently at Middlesbrough, which would create a possible obstacle to his hiring at Wolves' stadium.
Nevertheless the former Luton Town head coach - who made more than 100 of appearances for the club during his playing career - is said to be a leading candidate for the vacancy.
The mid-career manager is said to have support from the club board as they begin the search of appointing a fresh manager.
O'Neil is also appearing as a unexpected candidate, even though he would be a surprising choice considering he was sacked by Wolves in the previous winter.
The former West Ham United player is out of work which means the club would not need to pay any compensation.
